2014 Block-A-Month Crochet-A-Long

11 Jan

I was motivated to join this year’s BAMCAL at Ravelry this year and these are the January squares:

Frostbloom 12" square
Frostbloom 12″ Afghan Square by Shan Sevcik
This is an awesome pattern that is well-written and not as difficult as one might think when looking at the result. In fact, I so loved working on this square that I bought the designer’s ebook.

Next is a square from the ever-reliable SmoothFox aka Donna Mason-Svara
This one is Lemony Lime Citrus in Pink.
Lemony Lime Citrus Square in Pink

Both squares were done with my favorite Etimo Tulip “I” hook and a mix of yarns.
*the lighter shade of pink is ILTY pink, the darker shade is VC pink poodle
*the dark color is RH Soft magenta
*the green (limelight), peach, white, and yellow is ILTY

Christmas Grannies

It’s hard to take decent pictures lately with all this dreary weather. OF course, the dreary weather keeps me inside and playing with yarn and there’s nothing bad about that!
These are all made with the same I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby and an H hook.

Enough Love to Go Around

First up is Enough Love to Go Around by Penny Davidson. It is indeed quite beautiful and perfect for anything Christmas, but I must warn you, this pattern will likely test your patience. The original pattern is not easily followed, although I didn’t particularly find any of the rewrites much better. Looking closely at the photos of others’ squares helped, a LOT. I was not happy with the end result until I blocked it.

Anticipation

This square was part of a mystery CAL with this Ravelry group and the pattern is now posted for free. I must admit that there was a learning curve for me on this one and I had to rework several different areas to get it right. The surface crochet was worked with an I hook, otherwise the rest was worked with an H hook. It’s very detailed, pretty, 3D and will be a lovely addition to my Christmas afghan. This one is called Anticipation. The square would look much better with blocking and another round or two, but it is right at 12″. It won’t matter once it is joined though.

Cute as a Button

Now for something a little easier: Cute as a Button
This is another reliable pattern from Donna aka SmoothFox and there are plenty of pictures in the pattern to help. She is one of the first places I go when searching for square patterns.

Happy Hooking Ya’ll

Name a Square

13 May

SmoothFox has written patterns for 2 more 6″ squares and she’s asking for names. If she picks yours, then you, the lucky winner,  can pick a pattern from her pattern store. Cool, don’t you think? I like picking names: baby names, puppy names, hermit crab names…..

pssst…..I tested these squares and they are a smart pair.  I’ll post mine, after she posts them on her website….if I can wait!

Give ’em a look and see what clever names pop into your head.  There are only 2 days left!

WIP-it January

1 Feb

Weeeeell, lets see.

  • Heart Garland done and hanging beautifully in my living room, as you can see in the post below.
  • The Snowman was 86’d.
  • The Flannelghan made it out of hibernation! This is big progress. No, it’s not finished, but I am working on the edgings. Working w/2 strands of RHSS easily tires my wrists. I hope the snowy weather doesn’t chase it back into it’s den.
  • 2010 BAMCAL is on target, in fact, I just dl’d February’s patterns tonite. Yay!
  • 2009 BAMCAL squares – strips are together.
  • Brown wool shawl – haven’t touched it.

Shiney Things Update:

I’m not keeping up the pace with the GourmetCrochet CAL. The shell blocks are interesting enough and it will look smashing, I think. Here’s a little peek:

Test Squares
I’m very honored to have tested two 6″ granny square patterns for SmoothFox Original Crochet Patterns.

Celtic Cross Granny 6×6 – which I already showed you and this new one:

Flower Button Granny 6×6
Flower Button Granny

You can see how the center looks like a 4-hole button.  The variegated w/the red really looks much better IRL than the picture.

So, my WIP-it January wasn’t a resounding success as far as getting all my hibernating projects finished, but I did manage some new to me type projects. Plus, it was all about yarn and all about crochet….always a good way to end the month.

I’m easily excited…

…when it comes to yarn, I suppose.

Donna Mason-Svara aka SmoothFox designs a lot of crochet squares, so I have her blog on speed dial. She puts offers on her blog for crocheters to test her latest pattern….and the offer is gobbled up pretty quickly. Soooo, anyway, I pounced on the opportunity a couple days ago and was one of the testers for her Celtic Granny. I know you’re thinking…..it’s JUST crochet and it’s JUST a granny square, come on!. OK, OK, I’ll stop clamoring. Here they are:

In my latest patriotic colors and photographed in natural sunlight…..how about that. teehee
